PPA and Commerce Casino

Citing concerns that the Commerce Casino has turned its back on poker online enthusiasts nationwide by putting profits ahead of player interest and aligning with those determined to ban online poker, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the leading poker grassroots advocacy group with more than one million members nationwide, today launched a campaign to seek to change Commerce Casino’s position on federal licensing and regulation of online poker as proposed in H.R. 2267, the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act. PPA’s open letter to Commerce Casino has already yielded support signatures from over 120 high-level poker advocates, including PPA state directors and stars of today’s professional poker circuit like Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Barry Greenstein and Phil Hellmuth. The Commerce Casino’s opposition to federal licensing and regulation is a direct result of its desire to promote California-only licensing and regulation that would create a monopoly market where they are the main provider of online gaming services in the state. At the same time, intra-state licensing legislation means players in California can only play on California sites, with other players in California - severely restricting the both the pool of available players and types of games available to California poker players. The “Players Before Profits” campaign allows PPA members and all Everest Poker fr players to call, email or tweet the Commerce Casino to express their disappointment and urge the organization to support H.R. 2267. Additionally, players can add their name to the open letter to Commerce Casino’s owners outlining the concerns of the players. Federal efforts to regulate Internet gaming has received support from several brick-and-mortar casinos - including those with no vested stake in online poker - and hopes to see others in the community to join the call to encourage Commerce Casino to support poker player rights.

Learning Range

Learning Range By B. Butler As most any professional poker will most likely attest, in order to get better at poker games like Texas hold em and Omaha, you have to study the game. And while there is no real substitute for experience of sitting in on live games and online logging hours in actual hands, there is a wealth of information to be studied from players who’ve been around for years. Most any player who’s paid any attention to the scholarly side of the game knows about the poker bible, Doyle Brunson’s Super System and the more recently updated version Super System 2, which for the most part defined the admired aggressive style you see played by players like Todd Brunson and Daniel Negreanu. While that book maintains a legendary poker training status, there are several others that are just as significant, written by poker players such as David Sklansky’s The Theory of Poker and his advanced hold em strategies. Tournament enthusiasts will want to read Dan Harrington’s series of tournament hold em books for the study of poker math and odds. If you are going to be a long term winning cash or tournament poker player, studying the game of poker and its popular concepts such as check raise, stealing on the button, flop scrutiny and odds are all important factors that can be put to use in concurrence with actual live poker play. Information such as how to win sit-n-go’s and online MTTs, poker strategy, poker odds, Texas hold em rules and poker thesaurus, and so on.

Hold ‘Em Hands from Position

Hold ‘Em Hands from Position Your position in Texas Hold ‘Em poker should be a primary factor in deciding whether or not to play your hand. From early position, you need to stick to a tight range. In later positions, you can play more online poker cards. Here is a basic guide to which hands to play from specific betting positions: * From early position - the blinds and the two seats to the left of the blinds, it is best to limit yourself to premium cards. These include high pairs, A-A, K-K, Q-Q or J-J as well as suited connected face cards and unsuited face pokercards. * In middle position you can play a few more hands that include high suited cards, like Ace, King or Queen with a 10. If there is no raise ahead of you, then limp into the pot with highly ranked unsuited cards such as Ace-Jack, Ace-10 or K-J. You can also play medium strength pairs, such as pocket 8s through 10s. * Late position gives your more liberty to play speculative hands, especially when there has been no raising. If you can see the flop cheaply, then you can limp in with unsuited connectors, like 9h-10s etc. You also can play small pairs from late position. When there is no raise, you might even consider playing a weak Ace to see if you hit a lucky flop. Just remember, the earlier your position, the better your cards have to be to justify entering a pot.

More Game Leaks

There are common mistakes that some poker players make which cause them to lose their chips at a fast clip.

To stem the leaks in your poker game, avoid making these bad moves:

* Always calling a bet just to keep another player “honest” even though you know you’re hand is probably beat. No on is under any obligation to play sheriff at the table. Doing so will only erode your chip stack.

* Trying to bluff when there is a calling station at the table. Bluffs only work against players who are willing to lay down hands. If you’re up against someone who always go to the river, then forget about bluffing.

* Failure to notice that the game conditions have altered. Perhaps one or two players dropped out and the online poker table is short handed, or the loose maniac has suddenly tightened up. Be aware of atmospheric and physical changes at the table.

* Sitting down at a game that is really out of your league because there is a long wait for your favorite game or you want to challenge yourself. Stick to the games you know you can win. Save exploration of new formats and tables for small stakes situations, like free online play, and not where you can lose substantial money.

* Refusing to recognize that your hand which was probably best before the flop is now beat. Be willing to let go of your cards when the case card comes out that can beat your hand.

Big Blind Tips for Beginners

In Texas Hold ‘Em poker there are two forced bets: the big blind and the small blind, which is typically half the amount of the big blind. The purpose of the blinds is to get the action started. After all, if there are no chips in the pot, then why would anyone bet it? The big blind has the last action option pre-flop as the betting goes around the table. The big blind can fold, check or raise. Keep these tips in mind when you are in the big blind: * You are only last to act pre-flop, then will be at a disadvantage in early betting position for the following betting rounds. * If no one raises, then don’t fold even if you have a bad poker hand. Basically, as the forced big blind, you get to see the flop for the cost of your blind. * In limit poker, when players can only raise one bet at a time, you can call that one bet raise if several people have remained in the pot because there are most likely enough chips in the pot to justify your calling. * In no-limit poker, a player can raise any amount. If a big raise comes out pre-flop and you are holding poor starting cards, then fold them. It is rarely profitable to defend your big blind in No Limit games. * When you do get a strong starting hand in the big blind, you can raise the bet to get other players to fold. Just keep in mind that you will in early position, possibly even first to bet, during the next betting rounds.
